Gibraltar Port Authority New Recruit Qualifies as a Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Operator

The Gibraltar Port Authority has announced that its latest recruit has successfully qualified as a VTS Operator following an extensive period of training in the UK.

Mark Olivero was appointed as a trainee VTS Operator in August and after a short period of preparatory study attended the South Shields Marine School in September for a further 7 week period which provided his VTS, VHF radio and radar training before his final assessment by the college.

Promotion at the Gibraltar Port Authority

VTSO Daniel Lopez has recently been promoted to the rank of Port Officer.

Daniel joined the Gibraltar Port Authority in March 2014 and has been able to develop his skills during this time with attendance at numerous courses, both locally and abroad.

CEO and Captain of the Port (Acting), Manuel Tirado said: ‘I am delighted to see Daniel being promoted and wish him all the very best as he enters the next phase of his career with the Gibraltar Port Authority.’

Retirement at the Gibraltar Port Authority

Congratulations and best wishes go to Peter Wyatt on his retirement after over 26 years of service for the Port Authority, formerly the Port Department.

Peter joined the Port Department in 1991 after working in several government departments beforehand. His experience and knowledge as Financial Manager has been invaluable to both the Port and his colleagues.

J Manuel Tirado, Acting CEO and Captain of the Port, on behalf of everyone at the Gibraltar Port Authority, took the opportunity to thank Peter for his service and wished him a long and happy retirement.

GPA Co-ordinates Medical Evacuation

Gibraltar Port Authority Co-ordinates Medical Evacuation from cruise ship COSTA MEDITERRANEA.

The Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA) was contacted by the cruise liner COSTA MEDITERRANEA on the morning of the 2 October at approximately 1100hrs. The vessel was transiting the area and a passenger on board had encountered a medical complication.

Port Officer Receives Award For 30 Years Service

Congratulations go to Port Officer Luis Debono on completion of 30 years of service. He was originally an employee of the Port Department and subsequently became a member of the Gibraltar Port Authority on its formation.

The Acting CEO and Captain of the Port, Manuel Tirado, congratulated Mr Debono for his exemplary service and commitment and looks forward to his continued support in the future.

Retirement at the Port after Almost 43 Years’ Service

Congratulations and best wishes go to Port Officer Tyrone Ghio on his retirement after almost 43 years of service for the Port Authority, formerly the Port Department. Tyrone joined the Port Department as a very young man, initially serving as a Seaman and worked his way up to the post of Port Officer where his experience and knowledge were invaluable to both the Port and his colleagues. During his latter years in service, as Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Supervisor, Tyrone made a key contribution to the safe and efficient running of the busy port and waters.
