Busy Weekend for the Port Launch

The bank holiday weekend proved to be a busy one for the Gibraltar Port Authority (GPA) launch, GENERAL ELLIOT II. In addition to her routine tasking of cruise liner escort, patrolling of BGTW and embarkation and disembarkation of GPA and GMA personnel onboard vessels anchored in the bay, the launch was involved in a number of other tasks.

GPA Appoints New Port Maintenance Coordinator

The Gibraltar Port Authority has confirmed the appointment of Mr Leslie Schembri as its new Port Maintenance Coordinator, following his promotion and a period acting in post.

Mr Schembri is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Port’s assets, including its launches.

Commodore Sanguinetti, CEO and Captain of the Port congratulated Leslie on his promotion and wished him every success as he progressed to the next stage of his career with the Gibraltar Port Authority.


The Gibraltar Port Authority will shortly be updating its current Port Handbook and wishes to receive expressions of interest from locally based companies to produce a revised version, including updated editorials, photographs and factual information. This publication must be funded through advertising-generated revenue.

Inaugural Calls – Ocean Nova and Majestic Princess

The Ocean Nova and Royal class vessel Majestic Princess will be making their inaugural calls to Gibraltar this week.

The Ocean Nova is a cruise ship purposely built for use in arctic waters. It has a capacity for 68 passengers which can be accommodated in 37 outer cabins. She has a gross tonnage of 1,518 tonnes and
a length of 72.20 metres.


The Gibraltar Port Authority has announced that its latest recruit has successfully qualified as a VTS Operator following an extensive period of training in the UK.

Jovan Buttigieg was appointed as a trainee VTS Operator in February and undertook 3 weeks of preparatory study before attending the Blackpool and Fylde Nautical College in March for a further 4 weeks which provided his VTS, VHF radio and radar training before his final assessment by the college at the end of March.

Port Authority TV Documentary on GBC

The Port Authority is currently the subject of a GBC TV documentary giving a 'fly-on-the-wall" account of the Port's daily routines and business. The programme is called "Port Ops" and is broadcast every Tuesday night at 22:00 hrs.

Multi-Agency Search Carried Out In Gibraltar Bay for Ferry Passenger Lost Overboard

A comprehensive multi-agency search was initiated last night for a passenger reported lost overboard from an Algeciras ferry.

Following a report from the Algeciras Salvamento Maritimo at 19:30 hrs on Sunday evening that a passenger from the outbound Algeciras ferry had been lost overboard, Gibraltar Port Authority launched a full scale search.
